What is Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS)?

Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) is a speciality in dentistry which focuses on the surgical aspects of the oral and facial regions.

To become an oral maxillofacial surgeon, a graduate dentist needs to undergo a 3-year postgraduate course in OMS followed by hands-on surgical training in hospitals and institutions. He/she will also have to be accredited as a specialist by the Ministry of Health, Singapore.

Dr. Winston Tan Kwong Shen

Dr Winston Tan received his Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1992 and Masters of Dental Surgery in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) in 1997, both from the National University of Singapore. He served as assistant professor in the Department of OMS from 1997 to 2003. In addition, he is also a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Dr Tan is a renowned speaker in regional and international circles and has conducted numerous workshops on dental implants and OMS. His special interests are diverse and include dental implants, facial reconstruction and orthognathic surgery.

Dr. Gideon Wee Tze Haur

BDS, MDS, FRACDS, FAM (Singapore)

Dr Gideon Wee Tze Haur is a registered Oral & Maxillofacial specialist with the Singapore Dental Council. He graduated from National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2003. He then went on to specialist training at NUS and obtained his Master of Dental Surgery in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2008. In addition, he is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

He served in the public sector from 2008 to 2012 in the department of OMS at National Dental Centre Singapore. He is currently serving as a visiting specialist at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, Associate Staff in the National University Hospital and as a part time tutor to the undergraduates in the National University of Singapore. Apart from his involvement in the local institutes, he is also a member of the Asian Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, and a member in the Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Singapore.

Dr Wee has given several lectures and co-organised many workshops in the fields of dentoalveolar surgery and dental implants. His special interests are in the field of dental implants, and orthognathic surgery.

Dr. Clement Lye Poh Wah

Dr Clement Lye Poh Wah obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the National University of Singapore in 2002. He received several academic awards during his undergraduate years in Dentistry including Dean’s Lists, among others. He went on to pursue Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training and graduated from the National University of Singapore with Masters of Dental Surgery in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2009.

Upon completing his advanced specialty training at the National Dental Centre Singapore, he was registered as a specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. His work encompasses all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

His special interests are in the fields of Dental Implants, Temporomandibular joint disorders, in particular minimally invasive surgery of the joint, and Orthognathic surgery; for which he has been actively involved in delivering lectures and conducting workshops.

Dr Melvin Liew

BDS, MDS (OMS) (Singapore),
FAMS (OMS)

Dr Melvin Liew is a registered Specialist with the Singapore Dental Council as an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. He obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2009 from the National University of Singapore. Subsequently, he was awarded the NUHS Academic Medicine Development Award in 2012 to achieve his Master of Dental Surgery (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) in 2015, also from the National University of Singapore.

During his time in the public sector, he was a Consultant in both National University Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, having the appointment of Head of Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics in NTFGH in 2022. He served as an Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in the Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore from 2015 to 2024, teaching numerous Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.

He practices the diverse range of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Special interests include dental implants, sinus lift and bone grafting surgery, orthognathic surgery and the removal of impacted teeth.

We know that, for some of us, the trip to the dentist could be daunting. We want to make your visit with us as comfortable as possible. Your initial visit with us will comprise of consultation, examination and diagnosis. We will be able to offer different treatment options tailored to your needs and requirements.

If you are referred by another dentist or doctor, please bring along your referral letter and x-rays if you have them.

We recommend that patients under the age of 21 be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
